Master-planned community popular with families; Easy access to Redcliffe, freeways and Sunshine Coast

A master-planned community about 28km north of Brisbane, North Lakes was first developed in the early 2000s.  Formerly a pine plantation, the estate development spans some 1,000 hectares and is expected to be home to about 20,000 people on its completion. It was officially made a suburb in 2006. Given its youth, the majority of homes in North Lakes are single-set brick-and-tile houses, while the suburb also has a smattering of Queenslanders. There are also units and townhouses. Surrounded by the suburbs of Mango Hill and Deception Bay, North Lakes is very popular with families and couples. The area has two primary schools as well as a high school. The nearest university is the Caboolture campus of the Queensland University of Technology, while there is a TAFE college in Redcliffe.

North Lakes has access to a variety of modern amenities including major supermarkets and sporting facilities. While the suburb already has ample parks, bike, walk and waterways, these will increase as the area develops. Westfield North Lakes opened in late 2003 and contains a Myer, Coles and Woolworths. North Lakes Business Park, which began construction in 2007, is expected to be completed by 2014. The nearest train stations are Petrie, Strathpine and Dakabin on the Caboolture line, while the airport is 35 minutes away in Brisbane. The suburb is well positioned near the Bruce Highway, and trips to the Sunshine Coast only take 45 minutes.

North Lakes has officially been named a suburb, gazetted by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water in March 2006. The suburb of Mango Hill has been approximately split in half forming the two suburbs. The suburb is mostly made up of newly developed housing.  The origin of the suburb name is from the name given to the estate development. The suburb includes an abundance of parklands, schools and shops and currently houses 10,000 people, with 25,000 projected by the end of the development. There are also many new facilities in the area, including the North Lakes Community Centre and the recently extended Westfield North Lakes. Major tenants of the shopping centre include Target, Coles, Big W, Woolworths, Myer and a cinema complex.

North Lakes Business Park started construction in 2007 and is planned to take 7 years to fully complete. It will ultimately create 5,000 jobs, cover 55 hectares and cost $130 million. Construction of a walk-over bridge crossing the Bruce Highway and leading onto a path/corridor that heads to the Dakabin railway station is also planned in the future; the walk/ride will be approximately 2.5 km.The suburb's state school, North Lakes State College, has two campuses. The Year 11-12 campus is known as the "Urban Learning Centre", and is located beside the Pathways centre in the Town centre. The $12 million project was completed December 2007. This is due to be extended to accommodate the unexpected large number of students, in the next 12 months.

The suburb has a State College (North Lakes State College), which serves Prep to Year 12 students, and a Private College (The Lakes College), which serves Prep to Year 7 students.
